During the recent trail of pop star Michael Jackson, the perils of chronic back pain made the front pages of newspapers everywhere. Jackson, who hurt his back after slipping in the shower, was late to his trial because he had to seek ongoing treatment, months after the initial incident. The stress of the trial also contributed to his chronic pain.

Chronic low back pain is one of the most common ailments plaguing men and women across the country. It's no joking matter. Chronic pain causes months and years of suffering and can lead to sleeplessness, reduced sex drive, loss of income, and deep clinical depression. Beyond the chronic pain itself, sufferers also experience stomach and digestive disorders from the powerful pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by their physicians.

Balance your personal and professional commitments while earning a respected Ph.D., master's degree, or bachelor's degree online at Walden University. Programs offered in management, education, psychology and health and human services.

Two kinds of medical conditions cause the symptoms of chronic back pain. Pinched nerves or other damaged tissue can create the intense stabbing or burning sensations known as neuropathic pain. Nociceptive pain is associated with disease or long-lasting damage to your body outside the nervous system. Arthritis is one such ailment known to cause the dull throbbing of nociceptive chronic pain.

Finding Pain Relief that Works

Back pain sufferers seek the advice of physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and other health care professions to treat chronic aches and pains. Now that more popular Cox-2 inhibitors like Bextra and Vioxx are no longer available, physicians may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics (such as high-dosage ibuprofen), and opiates. They may add antidepressants and anticonvulsants to the regime. Beware the perils of long-term use of habit-forming codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone.

Many practitioners will prescribe nerve blocking electrical units or epidural steroids. Be willing to investigate non-Western therapy as well as gentle exercise such as walking, swimming, or Yoga.
