Counseling for Katrina at a Premium

The environmental disaster that was wrought by Hurricane Katrina left thousands of New Orleans residents dead or injured and millions displaced. Long after the clean up, the mental effects of the crisis will remain with victims, requiring professional counseling from certified degree holders.

Even before this historic storm struck the mainland, disaster relief organizations were mobilizing their counseling professionals is preparation. The after-effects of a crisis of this magnitude are well documented and profound.

Victims can expect long days and nights of recovery, both physically and emotionally. The stages of suffering must be handled delicately to ensure that patients are able to cope with the entire range of confusing feelings. But there are simply not enough resources to satisfy this growing need.

Disaster Counseling

  • Dealing with Death. The first counseling need for Katrina victims will be helping victims cope with the death and disappearance of family members.
