Nursing in Demand

Why are nurses in such high demand? The aging Baby Boomer population has a lot to do with it, as do the aging population of nurses (with few young ones to take their places), and the overall shift in the health care industry away from doctors and toward skilled nurses. This all means that the demand for nurses with advanced education to develop public policy, to teach, and to spearhead research is particularly high. That's where the doctorate in nursing comes in.

A nursing doctorate may come in several varieties, depending on specialty. The Doctor of Nursing (ND) builds on the role of the advanced practice nurse, and prepares leaders who can affect change in system creation, and evidence-based decision making in a variety of settings, from the clinic to the classroom.

Doctorate Degrees in Nursing

A Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) prepares nurses as scientists, giving them the investigative and leadership skills to influence the health care system through measuring outcomes and statistics.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing prepares its students for theoretical research, and graduates will be prepared to research, lead health care delivery organizations, teach, and create public policy.

The nursing doctorate focuses on health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, long-term care, and aspects of management such as budget analysis or system development. While those on the front lines of health care, the RNs, are the immediate recipients of nursing recruitment efforts, the health care system will greatly rely on its leaders, those with the doctorate in nursing, to take health care into the future.
