A registered nurse performs a myriad of duties each day. To state the nursing description precisely, nurses work to support and encourage health, prevent disease, and assist patients in coping with illnesses. A registered nurse or anyone in the nursing field is an advocate and health educator for not only their patients, but also families and communities.
Some duties that a registered nurse performs often include observing, assessing, and recording symptoms, reactions, and progress in their patients. They also assist physicians during surgeries, treatments, and examinations. In addition, a registered nurse administers medications to patients and assists in rehabilitation of their patients.
Other duties that a registered nurse executes are developing and managing nursing care plans, giving instructions to patients and their families to ensure proper care, and helping individuals and groups take the necessary steps to improve or maintain their health.
Training to Become a Registered Nurse
In order to become a registered nurse, you must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing examination. This will allow you to obtain a nursing license. You must renew this nursing license periodically, which may include continuing education.
The three major educational routes you may take to become a registered nurse include earning a bachelor's of science degree in nursing, an associate degree in nursing, and a diploma.
Depending on which of these routes you are interested in taking, you may choose to complete a program at a university, college, or technical school. There are also accelerated master's degree programs available for the nursing field.
