Reflexology Treats More than Sore Feet
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient type of touch therapy that uses pressure applied to specific areas of the feet and hands. Reflexology is based on the idea that each area of the body has a corresponding area on the feet and hands. Pressure applied to the feet and hands releases tension and pain in the corresponding parts of the body. Reflexology was first practiced in ancient China, Egypt and India, and was introduced to Western medicine in 1913 as "zone therapy."
Where Can I Learn More?
Reflexology is usually taught as part of a program at a massage school. It is a complementary therapy designed to treat the entire body and mind, and not simply pain. The entire body, as well as the patient's state of mind, is considered in determining a treatment program. If you're interested in practicing reflexology therapy, you should have good listening skills, and truly care about helping people. As part of a massage therapy program, you will study a wide variety of subjects, including biology, physiology, and anatomy.
Reflexology Therapy Treat Many Conditions
Reflexology therapists treat conditions including:
- Back pain
- Hormonal imbalances
- Arthritis
- Digestive disorders
- Sports injuries
As with any therapeutic treatment, results are never guaranteed. Reflexology is not credentialed or licensed, but is taught as a skill within a group of healing techniques. Reflexology therapists may be self-employed as massage therapists, or may work for allopathic medical practices, hospitals, and other health-care providers. Want to learn more?
