Variety of Health Information Technology Jobs

Medical and health information technology jobs encompass a variety of positions and duties. These duties can include taking x-rays, assisting patients with rehabilitation equipment, ordering equipment, taking appointments, gathering and assembling patient's health insurance information, making sure medical charts are complete, and assisting physicians and medical technicians.

Health information technology jobs also often involve the knowledge and use of computer programs used to tabulate and analyze data in order to help improve patient care and to control patients' costs.

Health Information Technology Training

Health information technology jobs typically require at least an associate's degree. Many accredited community or junior colleges offer associate degree programs in health information technology that will prepare you for a health information technology job, or to go on and receive a four-year degree in health information technology or a related field.

These health information technology associate degree programs will provide you with a background in biology, chemistry, health, and computer sciences, as well as training in basic human anatomy and physiology, medial terminology, basic rehabilitation procedures, patient treatment methods and techniques, and x-ray technology.

You will also receive basic training in the computer programs used to chart health records, as well as administrative training in medical insurance and coding, medical records, billing and collections, appointment scheduling, and database management.

Jobs in Health Information Technology

With a degree in health technology, you will have the skills necessary to find a job in the health technology field. These health information technology jobs can include becoming a medical or therapeutic health technician, or medical assistant. Health technology jobs are often found in medical rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, clinics, or private practice offices where you will typically work under the direction and supervision of an occupational or physical therapist or physician.
